01/12/06 Glovedup in Sterling

It's 5 years since the first collection of fingerless gloves was launched on Glovedup.com.
Back then Glovedup was based in Amsterdam (Holland), where the currency was Dutch Guilders. This didn't seem like a smart choice for a global website, so shop items were priced in US$.

Now in London and 5 years on, it's time to switch currency from $ to £, and to up the prices - which have been the same since 2001.

The collections of Eley Kishimoto, Vivienne Westwood, Carlota Joakina and Robert Cary-Williams (Glovedup fave) make Hoxton Boutique an inspiring/exciting place to shop. Once again Glovedup joins forces with London-based designer Mei Hui Liu to make fingerless gloves for her label Victim Fashion Street. The SS05 show takes place in a beautiful Mayfair hotel. Images of St Brides Church spire (the inspiration behind the tiered wedding cake) are printed onto pastel coloured gloves, and white cotton dishcloths are transformed into lacy mitts with bride and groom cameo patches.

Glovedup Stockist: Occhi in Athens01/02/04 Occhi Art Space

The Occhi art space is a gallery and boutique. Nested in the old city of Athens, Occhi's owner and curator is Anna Polydorou, who was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. As an journalist in the arts, Anna observed the difficulties artists and designers encountered when trying to find suitable platforms for their work. This drove Anna to create Occhi as a totally flexible art space, where all fixtures and fittings are movable so that the artworks and products define the exhibition character and personality, rather than adapting to an imposing house-style. Occhi has no rules or regulations when it comes down to curating and product selection. All sorts of pieces are shown: lights, clothes, jewellery, gadgets, t-shirts, prints, etc., as long as they work together to build the exhibition vibe.

All items in the store are hand-made, unique and tend to have an artistically playful character. According to Anna, the experimental and playful nature of the Occhi space comes from the Greek and Cypriot artists and designers (Joanna Louca, Christos Kyruakides, Kyriaki Costa, Re-form, Filio Kehayia) who tend to be much more free with colours and materials. Anna also selects artists and designers from other parts of Europe (Glovedup, Krvkurva, A Forest and Fevered Deviant) to mix with the local creative talent.

Glovedup gloves are now available at Occhi, see stockist info for address details. A special Agent Anonym/Glovedup exhibition is planned at Occhi for Autumn 2004.
